SPOLANA s.r.o. is the only producer of PVC and caprolactam in the Czech Republic. It also supplies the market with premium quality industrial fertiliser based on ammonium sulphate and other chemical products. The technological procedures in petrochemical production involve the emission of harmful substances, but their quantity complies strictly with the integrated permit, which was granted to SPOLANA s.r.o. within official proceedings by the Regional Authority of the Central Bohemian Region.
SPOLANA s.r.o. fulfils its statutory obligations by regularly reporting the quantity of emitted harmful substances to the Integrated Pollution Registry (IPR), which is created and management by the Ministry of Environment as a public administration information system. The IPR is operated by CENIA, the Czech environment information agency. All of the indicators reported within the IPR comply with the limits prescribed for SPOLANA s.r.o. by the issued integrated permit.
One of the priorities of SPOLANA s.r.o. and its owner - the Unipetrol Group - is to minimise the impacts of its activity on the environment. One example is the current investment into new equipment worth hundreds of millions of crowns, which will reduce emissions from the corporate energy system. This involves the construction of new energy boilers and transition from coal to natural gas. As at 30 November 2017, operation was terminated of the amalgam electrolysis facility, in which mercury was used. At present, preparatory works are underway before the primary rehabilitation project. Emissions of carcinogenic substances grew by 0.6 tonnes year-on-year, in consequence of the increased frequency of technology relocation.*** Overall, the total volume of emitted substances was successfully reduced by 5.8% year-on-year.
The management of SPOLANA s.r.o. is also aware of the importance of transparent and open communication with citizens, representatives and interest groups in the municipalities near the production plant facility. For this reason, Spolana has established long-term cooperation e.g. with the Kralupy Ecological Centre, the non-profit NGO ALKA Wildlife which engages in caring and protecting wildlife, and the local organisation of the Czech Fishing Union in Neratovice. Open communication with the neighbouring municipalities and their inhabitants also includes the Open House Day, last held at the Spolana facility on 23 September 2016.
The SPOLANA s.r.o. production facility has also enrolled in the voluntary Responsible Care program - Responsible Business in the Chemical Industry, and is a member of the Czech Business Council for Sustainable Development (Czech BCSD). The enterprise has implemented an environmental management system (EMS) pursuant to EN ISO 14001:2004. EMS certificate here.
